Santa & Sales

I feel like I only finished my Christmas shopping a couple of days ago (oh, wait, yes I was frantically buying presents on Christmas Eve) and now, the sales are upon us and it's time to abuse my debit card again.

I was really excited when I headed into town this morning although I actually ended up buying very little. I'm quite proud of myself for being so restrained. I really don't need that many more clothes and want to focus on buying things that I love and know I'll wear a lot rather than having a lot of reduced, impulse buys that actually go with nothing in my wardrobe and later end up being flogged on ebay for £2 or going to Oxfam. I feel like I've fallen out of love with cheap, fast fashion and want to invest in classic, quality pieces. This isn't to say that I'll never set foot in a branch of H&M again but I am going to try to be more thoughtful about what I buy and whether I really need it.

So, firstly, Santa's offerings. My first present is really the "Merry Christmas to me, love from me" kind. I'd been in need of a new camera for a while and wanted to get one that was a cut above the standard holiday-snaps digital camera. While I dream of owning a DSLR, I don't know the first thing about photography and it's unrealistic that I'll ever have the time or skill to learn, so I went for a compromise with the Panasonic Lumix LX3. It has more features than a regular digital camera but doesn't have the complexity or price tag of a DSLR.

Santa (my parents) brought me this amazing notebook laptop. I'm starting my LPC in February and really wanted one to take to lectures with me as while I was at uni I was always lugging around about a million folders and pieces of paper - not good for my back, or the poor handbag I stuffed them into. This mini Vaio was a lovely surprise - I have a full sized Vaio already (Vincent) and this one is his little brother (Vinnie)! I prefer to get one special gift from my parents rather than lots of small things that I don't really need. I'm so happy that they got me this, especially as it took my dad two weeks and a lot of phone calls to track down the white version for me:

Today was sales day. I hit John Lewis with my mum this morning and went for a lovely post-Chirstmas lunch with a friend and afterwards popped into Topshop. While I was lunching, my parents went to a massive M&S to check out the bargains there and this is the result of our combined shop:

The leather shorts were £10 from Next. I never usually shop in Next but it's famous for it's sale and 5am opening today (I did a couple of years there as a Christmas temp...so glad that my days in retail are over!) and I think that these shorts don't look "Next" at all.

The green satin skirt was a Christmas present from my mum, it's M&S Limited Collection and I love the colour.

My mum found this leopard print pencil skirt in M&S today, reduced to £15. I picked up the demin shorts in Topshop, also £15.

What have you been buying in the sales?

  17. I havent hit the sales yet because I was unwell over boxing day, but maybe thats a good thing because I really dont have the money to be going crazy! I know what you mean about wanting quality pieces instead of throw away fashion... maybe thats just us getting wise in our old age eh :) who doesnt love a bargain tho! looks like you bagged some great pieces xx

  18. @ DesignerSpray - that sounds pretty scary! Glad you ended up getting some bargains though!

    @ Aly - following you now :)

@ Caz - I still need to visit the Boots sale...the queues were so long that I couldn't be bothered to look but hopefully things have calmed down a bit now.

@ Lauren - thank you :) and well done for being so restrained in the sales!

@ Ayden - hope you're feeling better now :) I'm so torn between bargains and saving for quality items - sometimes the bargains are just too tempting not to purchase!
