Review: Rimmel The Max Volume Flash Waterproof Mascara

Waterproof mascara is one of my summer essentials. My lashes are naturally quite long and thick but are really fair so without a good coat of black mascara they're practically invisible!

I've tried a few waterproof mascaras in the past - many of which are not actually waterproof which slightly defeats the point when you're buying them to be worn in the sea/pool. I hadn't yet purchased a waterproof mascara for this summer so I was very excited to try out Rimmel's Volume Flash Waterproof mascara when it arrived in the post last week.

What does Rimmel Say?

Take big to the new MAX! New Volume Flash the MAX Waterproof Exclusive Quick setting ‘Lash Expand’ formula with Collagen to fatten and Keratin to strengthen. Lashes are pumped to full volume. Skinny to fat in 10 SECONDS FLAT. Our BIGGEST BRUSH EVER with unique ‘Perfect Fit’ technology for perfect loading of each lash. No clumps. 14 x lash volume with no clumps. Waterproof formula Easy to remove.

What do I think?

First impressions...I like the big brush on this mascara. It reminds me of Benefit's Bal Gal Lash and L'Oreal Voluminous. The bright pink packaging is slightly garish but this does seem to be a bit of a trend with drugstore mascaras at the moment and I do prefer bright pink to the yellow Maybelline Colossal. Also, as this is a summery make-up product, I'll let if off for being so bright and attention seeking.

The formula of this mascara is pretty dry, when I pull the brush out of the tube there's not much product to be seen on it. The mascara applies easily but it takes a good few strokes before I can see it on my lashes.

I definitely don't agree with the product's claim of 14 x lash volume, in fact, I don't think it really volumised my lashes at all. The look it gives is more what I'd expect from a lengthening or defining mascara.

The big question: Is It Waterproof?

After wearing this mascara to a sweaty gym session, in the shower and over the last couple of days when London has been really, really hot I can say that it does live up to its waterproof claims. I also suffer from hayfever and have been rubbing my eyes quite a lot (as much as I try not to) and it hasn't smudged.

Unlike other waterproof mascaras, this is removed pretty easily. It didn't shift when I used a cleansing wipe but my Botanics eye make-up remover quickly removed it.

LilyLipstick rating: 7/10

I'd have ideally liked a bit more volume but the fact that this, for me, was waterproof and is easily removed is a big bonus. I'll probably only use this on days when I think I need a waterproof mascara it doesn't give as much volume as I'd ideally like. This mascara retails for around £6 so it's a good bargain and you won't feel too guilty if you only ending up using it for a two week holiday.

Which waterproof mascara is your favourite?

  1. I agree about it being more of a lengthening/defining mascara, but I actually thought it was incredibly wet! It takes a while for mine to dry, maybe that's because I got the non-waterproof one? I dunno..

  2. I like that it goes out easily !Most waterproof ones doesnt! Thanks for the review!!!
